We are a broad coalition of residents, organizations, businesses, and entrepreneurs working towards a better vision for the non-aviation use of RDU Airport land. One that continues to provide much needed recreational opportunities for our area. One that is more compatible with the surrounds of Umstead State Park and Lake Crabtree County Park. One that better aligns with the investments our local municipalities have already made in greenway connectivity to this central hub for outdoor recreation.
The airport's Vision 2040 master plan involves needed improvements to aviation facilities (runways, terminals, rental car facilities). However, it also proposes non-aviation changes to lands that the community and many businesses find simply unacceptable. Current proposals call for destroying forest adjacent to Umstead State Park for a quarry, and destroying much of Lake Crabtree County Park for an office park and hotel.
Triangle, we can do better. These areas are currently the centerpiece of outdoor recreation in our area. Let's not squander this opportunity.
Our group is solutions-oriented and actively bringing various parties together from government, business, and our community to find a better way forward. One that considers both private and public means, one that preserves as much of this amazing area as possible, and one we can be proud of.
